Shop Talk: "What the Hell am I Doing?" at Community Print

Fake it ‘til you make it! Or at least that’s what the experts say. Creating a queer independent publishing business from the ground up is a lot of work, but Jonah’s one of those gays with the Audacity to figure it out. Join us on Halloween day for an in-person presentation on book publishing, event planning, and never giving up.

Copies of Countershade Press titles such as Menagerie and Family Prehistory (a zine made in-house at Community Print!) will be for sale.

Part of Community Print’s monthly Shop Talks series. These talks are free, but donations for the presenters are accepted.

Welcome to the Void: a Countershade Introduction and Drag Show

313 8th Avenue SE Olympia, WA | Event page

The world is circling down the drain. At least it feels like it is! In this new world of flux and flow, new alternative methods of thinking are required, stat. A queer publishing press is popping up in Olympia, specializing in speculative fiction (scifi, fantasy, horror, etc). But what's this got to do with the end of the world? Come meet the publishers of Countershade Press, Jonah and Austin Barnett, as they introduce you to their alternative worlds.

Audiences can expect to learn more about the press, followed with a monster drag show hosted by Luna DeLyte. Featuring D'Angelo Dandy, Corvyd, and Vanessa the Witch. Drag explores "the other side," submerging ourselves into worlds of storytelling through movement, words, and expression. All elements—from origin stories and lore to costume choices—bring audiences to experience a post-binary world of opportunity, where being your authentic self shines in the most fantastical ways.

Menagerie Book Launch

107 Capitol Way N. Olympia, WA | Event page

Menagerie’s book launch party kicks off at Browsers Bookshop on August 28, 2026 at 6:30 PM. Attendees can expect a theatrical soundscape performance directed by Austin Barnett, featuring five Olympian actors including Christine Goode and Deane Shellman. The event will be wrapped up with a post-performance Q&A between editor Jonah Barnett and author Cecilia Meade. Local art featured in the book will also be on display all of August leading up to the event in the bookshop’s upstairs Gallery.

The culmination of twelve years of work, Menagerie is the final form of a project that began in 2014. A collection of loss, these five tales run the gamut of what we lose at our darkest hour. Friendships. Loved ones. Dreams. Our sense of self. Ten authors and artists come together to produce a fantastical collection of lost things.
